If you have your heart set on getting a new Rottweiler, we have some tips that can help you choose the right puppy. Rottweiler puppies are just like any other puppies in that each litter will have a mix of different temperaments. Some of the puppies will be more dominant and some of the puppies will be more submissive. Depending on how you want your dog to act as an adult you can choose a puppy that is more dominant or more submissive to give yourself a better chance of getting a puppy that you will enjoy living with.
If you would like a dog that is going to be active and high energy then you will want to choose one of the more dominant puppies from the litter. If you want a puppy that is more laid back and lower in energy you should choose one of the more submissive puppies. To evaluate the puppies, when you first walk into the room where the puppies are, you should watch the entire litter and see how they act when they notice you. The puppies that jump up and come right over to you are likely to be somewhat more dominant. The puppies that hang back and only come over after a little while are likely to be a little bit more submissive. However this is not always 100% accurate. The more accurate test of temperament is to take each puppy and roll it over onto its back and hold it there for a moment. Puppies that begin squirming right away are likely to be the more dominant puppies. Puppies that are content at least for a few seconds before beginning to squirm, are more likely to be a bit more submissive and easy to manage as an adult.
Your puppy will not require any form of special Rottweiler training. Rottweilers train much like any other large breed dog. The main thing is to make sure your puppy is socialized as a young puppy so that it becomes used to other dogs and other people so that it does not become dog aggressive. The best way to do this is to take your puppy to a puppy kindergarten class. This is like a preschool for puppies. Your puppy will not really learn many types of commands, although it may practice very basic commands such as come or sit. The puppy kindergarten class is more a chance for your puppy to interact with other puppies so that it learns proper social skills and how to act around other dogs.
